Famous Lunch
It’s all about the hot dogs (cranked out over at the Troy Pork Store): four inches long, fifty-five cents apiece, loaded up with mustard, onions, and Zippy Sauce. Don’t waste everybody’s time ordering fewer than six of them. Famous Lunch is very likely the most unusual food spot in Troy (hey, they even serve RC Cola), but besides that it offers real diner cred and a chance for you to feel like a good old American (you better believe this place still allows smoking). If you can’t handle the dogs, there’s a spread of breakfast specials, hamburgers, and other standard stuff to choose from, plenty cheap. But come on, why bother?

I must add a few more things. These people that work there aren’t just employees of a business, they are family. You can go in and have the best conversations. Scotty is great. He listens to you and he has the greatest stories too. But, let me get back on track about this place. You must try it there when in Troy NY. Breakfast is great. Try an omelette with homefries. The rice pudding is awesome. Never tasted rice pudding so creamy before! Do what I have done. Each time you go try something different. You will love it all! Thank you Scotty, Steve, Frankie and everyone else there for a service well provided and a smile to brighten every day!
Famous is great! I never liked hotdogs, but some friends made me try it. This was about 8 years ago. Then for a while I was in there with my Fiancee every morning for breakfast. Frankie and Steve are the best people ever! The fun that goes on in the morning is great! I look forward to seeing Grandpa there all the time! He keeps us all laughing! Thank you everone there for making everyone else smile and laugh! You are all great and wonderful people. Oh yeah, throw your pennies up above the menu. Scotty collects them for charity! So start chucking them up!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know about thatlast guy, cause all i remember is i got the worst case of heart burn in my life at that place. thank god for that giant bottle of tums at the cashout… i mean gigantic!!
A friend and I were on a Harley road trip in ~1995, returning from a bike rally in Laconia NH back to Canada, we accidently ended up in Famous lunch Troy NY, hungry & curious we were drawn in by the window display. Two orders later and numerous free taste samples we departed for home, our bellies burning up with the zippy sauce. After many miles and years, we’re still craving more. I still have the buy one get one free coupon for our next unplanned visit. what a memory. RTF
I used to live in Troy, always ate at Famous Lunch and now i live in Arizona and miss Famous Lunch hot dogs and will love to relive my childhood favorite food. Could anyone tell me if Famous Lunch will send me some of their Zippy Sauce, miss the old time sauce.
I am in my fifties and every time we are down in the Troy area I have to stop and get some. I had a quadruple bypass over 3 years ago and the first thing I got was 6 with the works… boy were they good!
I’m a Troy native that moved to Florida many years ago. Was home on a visit this past May, and had to have a hotdog fix. While there, the manger told me that I could order hotdogs online and he would ship them FEDEX. Unfortunately, the web site appears to be down (famouslunch.com). Any insight as to whether this service is still available?
Famous Lunch was a place that I used to go to with my Grandfather as a child it holds many memories for me. The little hot dogs is something that can never be replaced. Now that I am away from home and in college I miss them even more. I even go to the extent to bring them on the plane with me when coming back to school. Thanks a lot :)
I started going to the Famous when I was about 10 with my grandfather. When I was 18 I got a job at Charlie’s Hot Dogs in Troy right next to the Famous. I didn’t last there long because I got caught by the owner (Charlie himself) going to the Famous for their dogs.
I live in Boston, my dad in North Carolina, and we both come up to Troy for these dogs. I haven’t found better dogs anywhere–no one can match the famous Zippy sauce! My mouth is watering just thinking of those little dogs.
Slide over GUS, sorry CHARLIE. World Famous Hot Dogs just…rocks! Just ask Adam, he’s a college fella that won’t stop at six with the works. We did do a very scientific survey. Burp! Scuse me.
What is in that Zippy sauce??
We’ll be back with Jacek next time.
Am 61 now. Been going there since I was 10. After the movies we would get 10 dogs for a dollar. The owner would line the dogs up his arm. Added to the flavor. Later used a metal sleve to line up the dogs. Now on plates. But always the same great taste.
I used to live in Troy when I was a kid and my parents would always take us to get “the little hot dogs and an RC cola.” I now live in Charleston SC and although the food here is great it will never beat the “little hot dog”. Thanks for the great memories!!!!
The guys who work at Famous Lunch are amazingly sketchy, creepy guys, but the “teenie weiners” make it worth the foray.
I lived in Troy for 10 years and always usee to go to Hot Dog Charlie’s establishment. Only recently since their demise did I return to The Famous Lunch. I found what I thought I had lost when Charlie’s went out. What A great place. Their dogs are out of this world. Nice people too.
Great dogs! I look forward to eating there any time I hit the downtown area.
I lived in Troy in the mid-seventies, and every time I travel back from my now-home of Rochester, I never miss my 12-plate of loaded baby dogs. A year ago I was blessed with the chance to buy my own sausage company here in Rochester, NY. Karl Zimmermann and his wife wanted to retire after 50 years. My wife and I bought the business and recipes… guess hot dogs are in my blood. And we kept a Rochester tradition alive. Long live the Hot Dog! Check out my web site, [www.zimmermannsHots.com].
HOT DOGS, baby! The hot dogs are everything and more. Amazing.
Just wanted to let you know that my father, who is almost 70 years (young), used to go there as a young boy. I have been to New York with him three times in the last seven years, and each time we have traveled to NY, we always make a point to stop there and have a few hot dogs and a soda… This restaurant brings back a lot of memories for my father, and he has shared them with me while we were there sitting. Thanks for the memories.
Famous Lunch is, in a (okay, two) word, great stuff. If you need a greasy spoon in Troy, complete with questionable looks from the staff because you order breakfast at night, then you absolutely can’t go wrong; Great eggs, great home fries, and tiny hot dogs that I’ll gladly watch friends eat, because I’m not man enough to do it myself.
